Black Chicago Sailors Assist with Sea Scouts
First photo: Commodore Dobbs of Jackson Park Yacht Club presents a check for $200 to Dick Snow as the Club's support for Sea Scout Ship Neptune. Individual members made up the total to $350, which will help the scouts to pay for trips and uniforms. Dick has recruited a new group of 10 eighth-graders from the Wadsworth School at 64th and University. They have started out by taking the Illinois Safe Boating class held at JPYC. Mates Ted Graves and John Porterfield are helping to train the scouts at their Thursday meetings.
Dick Snow, has been the coordinator of the Seas Scouts out of Jackson Park for many years. Snow and his wife Rosemary have much of their time and money to guide young, black inner-city kids in the Seas Scouts. Board member and Skipper, Ted Graves, Vice-Commodore and Skipper, Stanley Hill, along with Skipper Robert Bassett (of the Coast Guard Auxiliary) have been very active in helping to guide these young scouts.
